National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is focused on ensuring all Aussies learn about our shared history, culture and achievements. It is a time for businesses to step up, add their voice and take action for conciliation and reconciliation.

This week each year is intended to celebrate Indigenous history and culture, to foster reconciliation discussions. It started as the Week or Prayer for Reconcilliation in '93 before transforming into National Reconciliation Week in '96.

Every business, community and individual is able to benefit from learning more about our history.

When is National Reconciliation Week?

Every year National Reconciliation Week occurs between 27th May to 3rd June.

What types of events are ran each year?

Any event that is for the purpose of supporting reconciliation can be listed on the Reconciliation Australia website. Some of the NRW Events listed include weaving techniques at Griffith University, Storytime at Civic Square Library for pre-school children and art shows including smoking ceremonies, language classes and live performances.

What should I consider when planning events during National Reconciliation Week?

If you are an event planner, whether for corporate events or private events, consider including more about our First Nations. This year the theme is "Be a voice for Generations", which calls on Austrlaians to listen, share and amplify the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Can you adjust presentations and welcome addresses to acknowledge NRW?  Is your website up to date with their stance on acknowledgement? Do you know who your offices local community is?

If you are wanting to get more involved you can consider creating a Reconciliation Action Plan. You are also able to host a day at your office and request a Welcome To Country from your Local Aboriginal Land Council. NSW Aboriginal Land Council can be found here.
